Description
Come along and enjoy first light around Rydal Water and Grasmere.
We will meet at 7.00am at either White Moss car park or Pelter Bridge car park, Rydal. We will take a short walk to the shore of Rydal Water for some early morning shots where we might catch low level mist over the lake, or a sunrise, followed by a walk up to Rydal Cave, a man made cave which is the result of slate quarrying. We’ll head back down to the waters edge and follow the path along to the main road where it crosses at the Glen Rothay Hotel, and head up to the bridge over Rydal Beck at Rydal Mount. On the way we pass Dora’s Field next to Rydal Church. In spring time it is awash with daffodils planted by William Wordsworth in memory of his daughter Dora.
Once we are done at Rydal Mount, we’ll pop into the Rydal Hall Tea Shop for a drink and a sandwich, before we follow the Coffin Route back towards Grasmere.
The Coffin Route path offers some stunning views over Rydal Water and Grasmere, and as the autumn colours begin to take hold on the slopes of Loughrigg and Silver How we should manage some excellent shots.
Depending on the time we can follow the Coffin Walk to the end, where it passes Dove Cottage at the entrance to Grasmere and take a few shots of this pretty village. It’s roughly a further 3 miles to walk around Grasmere to get back to White Moss car park with about half of it on roads. Alternatively, we can leave the Coffin Walk early and descend down by White Moss and back to the shores of Rydal Water and Grasmere and turn right past the weir along the shore of Grasmere and get some shots of the village from across the lake, or we can head up the side of Loughrigg to Loughrigg Terrace which has superb view looking down on the lake and the village.
We will retrace our steps back to the car park at the end of the session.
This will be a fairly relaxed day, although the day will pretty much cover the locations listed a certain amount of flexibility is required to take into account weather conditions, car park availability, and perhaps even just enjoying a location. Group opinion will rule, if you want stay longer at a location at the expense of somewhere else or substitute one location for another, then if everyone is happy that’s fine.
If you are coming along specifically to visit a particular location in the itinerary let me know in advance and I’ll try to adjust timings and route to make sure it’s included, or if you would like a small detour to somewhere not on the itinerary, let me know and we’ll try to accommodate it.
